Newbie question for civil 3d files.

I use Carlson survey 2013 with embedded autocad.  Lately some .dwg drawings I am receiving from engineers to work on are in civil3d format. When I open them in my Autocad program all I see is squares.  Is there a converter than I can use to convert these files from 3d to 2d so I can see them?

Or can I email someone a file to convert so we can see if that indeed is the problem?
