the copy command for 2006 to emulate the move command capabilities?

Is there a way to get the copy command to emulate the movement that you can achieve with the move command?

for example, with the move command and ortho turned on, I can move an object a specified distance using the keyboard, say by punching in 10 for 10 feet while I drag my mouse to the North, and the object will move 10 feet in that direction.

I thought I remembered the copy command working the same way in the past. I would copy an object, establish a base point and drag in a certain direction using the mouse, but I would punch in the number for the movement distance.

I have worked around this by making a copy of the object first that lays on the original object and then using the move command to move the copy.

this is kind of a hassle for me and I'm sure there's a better way to do this without having to determine a destination point to snap to.
