System variable for hatch selecting

Good afternoon,

What is the command (system variable ?) to change how and what you can select in hatch pattern.  Currently I can only selection the entire pattern.  I need to be able to select an intersections of two lines within the hatch patter.  I have had to ask this every time I switch versions. I promise to write it down this time.
