How do I add text to a line?

I am currently a student learning Autocad 2013 and this is my first experience with the program. While it is clearly an amazing tool, I am admitly a frustrated user who find frequently finds himself fumbling around the program to perform what are probably basic actions. So I beg your patience when asking my questions.

For a current assignment I have created a drawing with several property lots. I am supposed to label the lengths of the lot borders. However, I am having difficulty doing this. I would like text to appear on/above the top line of each block, but I cannot seem to find a way to get the curser to appear on the line. My first question is whether or not this is even possible. It seems like it would be, but I have searched for advise on how to do this online and come up with nothing. Secondly, if it is possible to add text to a line could this text then be centered?

If this is not at all possible, what is the closest alternative method for inputting text on a line that is centered between the lot corners?

Thanks all. Actually, I am in Hawaii so I should say Mahalo. Sorry for asking what is probably a dumb question, but being a novice I am thoroughly stumped on how to accomplish this.
