Select Mesh Components by type

I am wondering if there is a way to limit the selection set for a mesh object in AutoCAD in the same way that the selection set can be limited in Maya or 3ds Mas (by Vertex, Edge, Face, Edge-loop, etc)?

I need to model several things that have a combination of organic and hard-surface/mechanical components, and I need the precision that comes with AutoCAD that is more difficult to obtain in Maya or 3ds Max.

For instance, there are times when I want to use a selection window (left-click and drag left or right and up or down to frame a selection set), but I only want to select vertices within that selection set.
