Editing Annotated Text (numbers) using DDEDIT in Polar Array

Hello everyone

I have just started to use AutoCAD2013 for the first time, and I am following Discovering AutoCAD 2013 book by Mark Dix and Paul Riley, and on Pages 290 and 291. I am trying to do the exercise of drawing Gauges. The same problem also can be found in pdf version on this link, page 307 http://wps.prenhall.com/wps/media/objects/2483/2542889/Chapter07.pdf. In it, there are nine graduation lines starting from lower part 45 degree to the left from the lower vertical below the center, and ending (clockwise) to 45 degree to the opposite side, on its right. The graduation marks are 0, 10, 20, 30, .... 80, with the number 40 right at the top, at 12 o'clock. According to the instruction suggestion, the indicator at the 12 o'clock position together with the number 40 should be made first, and then to spread it around by Polar Array - which I have done, with the the nine graduation lines showing or bearing the number 40 all over above the graduation marks.

My request for help is, how to use DDEDIT to change these numbers to 0, 10, 20, 30 ... 80 (instead of 40 all over)? (DDEDIT is the method suggested in the book to use). When I select the inner circle where the graduations are, the numerical numbers refuse to be selected individually. By pressing Ctrl-key and click, it seems to be alright, but when I type DDEDIT command, and select the number 0 (for example) the text zero sits on 40, instead of replacing it, and this is how all the other numbers also look like? Is there any order in the procedure of doing it? For example, (1) Select the circle of the Polar Array while pressing Ctrl-key on one item; (2) Type DDEDIT; (3) Double click to select the number; etc.... I tried it this way, but none worked. I spent too much time with this particular problem, and that's why I am writing to you now for help.

Many thanks to you in advance.
