Grips - Move - Copy

Hi All,

I'm sure i just need educated...

If i select an object, pick one of the grips, tap the space bar once to go to the "move" option and then hold down the ctrl key to make copies of the object...

Well, i get copies but they seem to be snapping to some invisible polar grid. In fact, if i then put aligned dimensions on, i get two dims alternating at 45 degree intervals.

Can i turn this behavior off and just place copies at random locations?
