How to align the bottom-most point of an object with a line/plane?

$

 Hello,
This is probably a stupid question, but I have been unable to figure this out after extensive searching.  Here goes:

autocad01c.png

I have a wheel from a *.STP file that I imported (see here, under 'CAD', its the left version).  I want to move it so that it rests on the rectangular block below it (seen here as a horizontal line).  In other words, I want the block to be tangent to the bottom of the curve seen in the first screenshot.  2D and 3D object snap are no help; there is no OSNAP point to the absolute minimum of the curve.  So alignment always does either something unexpected, or slightly inaccurate.

I can zoom-in and move the wheel repeatedly so that the minimum of the curve gets to within <1/1000th of a millimeter of the block below it, but I thought that there has to be a better (and more importantly, faster) way.

Thanks in advance.

Lofted splines show 'raster lines'. Or not!

Dear All,

Revamping an older 2012 3D drawing and using a number of lofted splines, I realised that all surfaces were showing on the screen their 'raster lines' (not sure of the term). This does not happen with more recent 2012 files. See Jpeg attached.

To get that confirmed I transfered some elements from the older file to a newer one. AutoCad renders will not show these lines when PDF renders will!

What setting(s) can possibly make that difference?!!

Thanks guys for your brain storming and best regards!

Advice? Viewing HUGE amount of proprietary Spatial Data - Which way to go?

$

Hi there!

I've got a rather strategic request here:

My goal is to render a quite large amount of data (say tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of entities) from within a proprietary geospatial data set (some SQLite DB I may add).

To have these data presented to the user in a sensible amount of time, I was thinking to

1) not display all the data at once, just the current view window and

2) therefore, I was thinking to employ multiple Threads that do the loading of each region as long as the user does not move the view (zoom, pan,...). "the UI should never freeze", right? ;-)

So far, so good. The problem/challenge now is that as I note, AutoCAD is not too keen on creating/drawing DB-resident entities from within another thread. Anyhow, I would rather not use resident entities anyway, as I fear them to produce too much performance overhead for just "roaming around in the drawing", with having to delete entities, etc.

Therefore, I was thinking to employ the TransientManager of current AutoCAD releases so I can operate directly on the graphics interface.

However, I experienced some random crashes - not even when drawing to the Transient Engine, but REALLY random :-(

I can definitely not count out that I've treated the thing correctly, but disposal etc. should have been ok.

So finally, a colleague of mine pointed me into another direction, namely FDO.

He's not familiar with the technology, but we were thinking that the things described above are maybe something that is FDO's daily business (pumping data from SOME data source to the graphics; plus attribute extraction, plus, plus, plus...), so that one should have less to worry about.

From what I've described, can you please give me some advice or point me in a the "right" direction?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

Cheers,

Fred

printing Issues

I have single .dwg were I have drawn manufacturing sequence drawings ( usally 10 to 20 drawings (A4 size landscape )).

When I need to take a print of all those drawings to issue it to shop floor it is time consuming to select each and every drawings and printing the same.

As the position of drawings within the dwg file is not going to change can any body suggest an easy method to take prints.

Paper Space Origin at Random Loaction

I have read many posts similar to this issue but have not found a solution.  The origin on my paper space layout is at some random location so the bottom left corner of the "page" in my paper space is at ~-26.1, -.101.  Everything is plotting fine and centered but I was hoping to realign this.  I have tried everything I have found online with no solutions.  Any assistance woudl be appricated!

Using AC 2015 LT but we've had this problem since we were using 2013 (and possibly before).

Parametric Crashing

My class and I are using Autocad 2016, working on parametric contraints. But for some reason about 3/6 of our computers crash when we use the dimensional contraints tool. It is most common when using and manipulating the radius tool. We have checked for cad patches for the 2016 version and for service packs for 2016. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Also when we try to add dimensions to our models (2D), they all go to refrence dimensions. We currently have no other dimensions associated with our drawing but it says that it will make it over-constrained if we add the dimensions.

add a fix contrain for a line will create a new line?

Dear All,

We met a problem that if we add a fix constrain to a line's end point, if the end point (line 1)have a point, it's will add a fix constrain and also will create a new line of there. but if the end point haven't any point or line(line 2), it's just add a fix constrain.

it's a AutoCAD constrain bug?

Thanks for any input!

Batch publish broken

Hello,

Recently I updated my Autocad Lt 2015 for MAc with the latest service pack and since then publishing is broken.

First of all, its going extremely slow. About a minute for one layout, and I hae to do almost 100 of them.

When in the bath publish dialogue box, and I click on 'Add open drawings' and then select another dwg then the one I am curently working in the Sheet name list stays empty. So I can't add layouts from closed pdf's.

Randomly when clicking on 'Add open drawings', and when I have a dwg active the Sheet name list stays empty as well. To make it work I need to have paperspace active instead of modelspace. Trying to 'Add open drawings' in modelspace will not work 90% of the time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

installing the Autocad free trial on a Mac

Hi there,

I live in the UK and am using a MacBook which I bought in mid 2012.

I'm running Mac OS X - Version 10.7.5 and wanted to install the Autocad free trial, but unfortunately I have had some problems installing it...

Please can someone advise how I can install the free trail ?

Should I upgrade to Yosemite and would this make the Autocad work - or should I try to locate and download an older version of Autocad ?

Is Yosemite likely to affect the rest of my computer use ?

Look forward to hearing any suggestions.

all the best,

Locking entire Drawing

Hello CAD Community,

I have a question... What is the best way to "lock" a dwg file to where it can not be manipulated. I have been using the DETER tool, but I understand it is fairly easy to "explode" a DETER block, just takes some time.

I do understand that with some time and effort, nothing is unsolvable. But most of the clients we deal with really do not have the time to be deciphering such "Locked" DWGs.

So if anyone has some recommendations out there, I would be very grateful... Thanks

Rotating text within Dynamic Block Help!

$

I currently use AutoCAD Architecure 2012, so please save in a format which can be used with my version if attaching a new file.

I am trying to create a block for our typical receptacles that labels the type of receptacle used. I have everything working as expected with the exception of the text rotation. Since the receptacle may be rotated (45 degree increments) to be placed onto walls the text currently wants to rotate the same which forces the text to be read upside down, backwards, etc. I know there's a way to override the rotation to still place the text in line with the receptacle while still keeping the typical left to right legability. If you open the block (see attached file) you'll notice that the types I currently have saved within the block are different lengths as far as the overall character count goes which may/may not be a potential issue with alignment when rotating. If anyone has the time to look into this and post any tips/solutions it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

DWG file created 2014 with cmddia=0 is corrupt

$

This seems like it may be a new bug in AutoCAD 2014:

IGESIN with cmddia = 1, save file, resulting DWG is okay.

IGESIN with cmddia = 0, save file, resulting DWG file gets error during open:

"One error found in drawing file during open.  Would you like to cancel this open?"

If I say "no" and open the file anyway, the drawing looks fine with no obvious errors.

Has anyone else seen this, or know how to avoid it?

Thanks.

Dimension Style Overall Scale Changing

$

I am trying to set up my own dimension styles but have a reoccurring issue. I will set the scale under the DIMSTY 'FIT' tab to the desired scale, but when I dimension something, it changes sizes. If I go to properties, it shows the Overall Scale as something different than what I set it to under DIMSTY. I have searched high and low for a solution, but have come up with nothing.
